Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation
2.27.13In November of 2012, the Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation (JSGF) awarded the Stroke Support Association a $10,000 grant. We at SSA are deeply grateful.
A long-time resident of Long Beach, Josephine S. Gumbiner was a social worker and clinical therapist who held positions at Family Service of Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Department of Adoptions, and United Way, among others. She also volunteered extensively to benefit the Long Beach community.
At the age of 63, Mrs. Gumbiner suffered a massive stroke. For a time, she attended one of our Stroke Survivor Support Groups, and later became a Group Facilitator. Board Members and Group Facilitators who have been with SSA for many years remember her fondly.
Soon after her stroke, Mrs. Gumbiner established her charitable foundation to benefit women and children in the Long Beach area. The foundation has extended its generosity to the SSA over the years.
The JSGF grant will support the Stroke Support Association’s general operating expenses and several of our programs, including our weekly Support Groups for stroke survivors and caregivers, the Hospital Visitor Program, and Community Education.
A special thanks to Julie Meenan, Executive Director of the Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation, who has maintained a close relationship with the SSA through the years. We were honored with her recent visit to our support groups, and appreciate her ongoing interest and guidance.
