Memorial Care Long Beach Medical Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center team educates students on stroke recognition and prevention after students see teacher suffer stroke
When the bell rang, school proceeded like usual. However, unlike most days, the students at a local Long Beach high school, had a real-life health lesson. Right before their eyes, their teacher was experiencing what looked to be a stroke.
The students noticed a sudden change in their teacher’s behavior – her face was drooping and she began having slurred speech. They acted swiftly and called 911. The students’ quick response saved their teacher’s life, underscoring the importance of acting quickly in an emergency.
After that incident, Long Beach Medical Center Comprehensive Stroke Center Director, Angie West*, MSN, RN, spoke to those students about the different types of strokes, reassured them that they did the right thing and answered any questions they had.
“I’m so proud of these kids,” says Angie. “I hope I made them feel more at ease, and empowered. But they did exactly what we would ask any adult to do.”
