Stroke Support Association held its annual potluck picnic on August 6 at Mae Bower Park in Lakewood, CA.
About 25 stroke survivors, family members, caregivers, facilitators, and guests gathered at an outdoor space populated by several picnic tables centered on an expanse of green grass and overlooking the park’s playground. The weather was perfect, neither too hot nor too breezy.
Christine Escalona, SSA’s Executive Director, organized the picnic, as she does each year. Her son and his girlfriend kindly showed up early to cover the metal picnic tables with brown paper, which they secured with green and orange potted plants. These plants, along with the purple orchid brought by Board President, Denise Shiozawa, were raffled off at the end of the picnic to the SSA members in attendance. The feast included ribs, chicken, various vegetable, pasta, and fruit salads, plus dips, desserts, and drinks.
A special visitor, Tsgoyna Tanzman, speech-language pathologist and author of Hope After Stroke for Caregivers and Survivors: The Holistic Guide for Getting Your Life Back, came to socialize and to donate a copy of her book to SSA’s lending library. Many thanks to Tsgoyna for the book and her ongoing support of SSA.
The next 12-week session of support groups for stroke survivors and caregivers will begin on Tuesday, September 3, at 10:00 AM, 3759 Orange Ave, Long Beach, CA.
