The Beginning
The Stroke Support Association began when a group of Long Beach
health care professionals met at a conference and discussed
the need for a stroke program to which they could refer patients
upon their discharge from the hospital. They saw the need for
a program that would bridge the gap between hospital discharge
and a subsequent adjustment to a place in the community.
The Stroke Support Association was formed after researching
other stroke support programs. The first stroke support and
education group meeting was held in November 1980. The program
has continued to offer meetings since that time.
Our Mission
The primary mission of
the Stroke Support Association is and always has been to assist
stroke survivors and family members in optimizing the quality
of their lives and their health. The unique needs of people
living with stroke---the long “recovery”, the permanence and
the challenges that come with the losses and changes—are not
and cannot be met through current medical care or other existing
community services. It is these needs that the Stroke Support
Association program addresses.
Program Goals
The Stroke Support
Association, concentrates 100% of its efforts on the issues
brought on by stroke by providing free services to stroke survivors,
caregivers and family members.
Providing information to help understand
changes caused by the stroke and to help reduce the risk of
another stroke
Assisting stroke survivors to achieve maximum
levels of recovery
Helping family members and caregivers to cope
with their individual problems
Assisting stroke survivors, caregivers and family
members to optimize their quality of life
